10th-Jul-2009 01:32 pm - Coke with Sugar
I just got back from vacation in Wales where they sold coke in little cans made with sugar not corn syrup and it was soooo good. It was the coke I remembered from childhood.

Where can I buy coke with sugar here? In little cans is a bonus as they were just the right size for an afternoon drink.

Thanks!!

10th-Jul-2009 01:03 pm - Semis on the Connector
Isn't the downtown connector supposed to be closed to tractor trailers passing through the city?  Aren't they supposed to go around on 285?  I feel like the connector has suddenly gotten much more congested with semis lately, especially on my morning commute.  Anyone else notice this?  Is there a reason for it that I've missed?

Hey all,

Does anyone know where I can get a custom stamp made? I know the design and wording that I want, but the online stuff just doesn't seem to have the full concept of custom down.

Help, please?!

For those of you who don't know, La Redoute is a european catalogue. Well, at least I thought we only had it here in Europe, but seeing the UK site made me realize otherwise.

Oh, dear. I was going through a photo highlight on Yahoo! because the very first one was cute and I felt it needed to be put in [info]splodefromcute, but this photo requires to be posted in this community!

LJ peeps: tell me one song you think that speaks something fundamentally -true- / song you've found powerfully moving. How/why doesn't matter so much, just want to see what comes from YOU (those who played on fb are of course exempt... ;))

ETA: songza/youtube links of such things for me. now, when i posted these last night to fb, i realized they are more in story form, and thus are removed from the literal, but i still feel very moved by something therein...

Eric Clapton - Lay Down Sally

Suzanne Vega - The Queen and the Soldier

Ani Difranco - Manhole (this is live but I dig it)

Kate Bush - Deeper Understanding

why these songs come to mind )
Took a short walk last night after dinner and stopped into a convenience store. The clerk stared at me for a minute in ways that made me wonder if he was going to go for a knife, and then said, "You work on that Rainbow Six?" I'd completely forgotten I was wearing my old Raven Shield shirt, which I still haul out on occasion because A)it's a shirt and B) it fits.

"Yeah," I said. "I was the writer on it." He grinned and started talking about how much he loved video games, until suddenly, he took another look at the shirt, and got a puzzled look on his face.

"Raven Shield. Is that the next one after Vegas?"

Call the nice young men in their white coats. I'm ready to go now.

10th-Jul-2009 11:30 am - I blame Joss for this one...
Oi, silly crossover plot bunnies, get out of my head!

Whoniverse/Marvelverse has some potential, I'll grant you: Jack and Logan playing the "this one time, I got nuked" "yeah, well once I was just a shoulderblade" game would be entertaining, maybe, but the current idea in my head is a baaaad idea. Jack Harkness and Emma Frost must never meet. Especially if she's playing kinky mind games on him while 'dressed up' (in Jack's head, at least) as Ianto. No no no.

Bad plot bunny. No cookie!

So, right, back to Planet Fucking Crazy. I was talking about game systems that would be appropriate for doing games set on PFC in my last post, so come up to speed there if you’re lagging behind.

A number of people posted replies, and I think it’s probably a good idea to start by answering some of their questions in the main context, then moving on to the larger issues.

[info]merb101 and [info]jake_richmond both bring up Classroom Deathmatch1, which is a fine, fine example of a game which definitely borrows elements of PFC. In CD, you essentially enact the events of Battle Royale, playing out the actions of a number of students forced to kill one another until only one is left. This is definitely a suburb of one of the main cities on PFC, without question. Where there’s a bit lacking is in the fairly limited scope that CD allows you to game out. It’s a very, very focused architecture and if you really want to do something beyond Battle Royale, there’d be a lot of work waiting for you.

Beyond the focus, there’s another, more metatextual2 reason to avoid Panty Explosion / CD for PFC setting games. One of the big mechanical hooks of the PE system is the idea that your character has a Rival and a Best Friend; your Best Friend narrates how you succeed in a conflict and your Rival narrates your failures. This is wonderful, brilliant design. Absolutely incomperable in many ways, but one of the effects is to focus on your character’s interpersonal connections to other characters as a mover of narrative power. Additionally, the size of the die you roll in conflicts is directly tied to your character’s social popularity. Again, an awesome reification of the high school experience3, but it’s not entirely appropriate for the bulk of the PFC experience since character social leverage is often directly at odds with their narrative influence. In fact, in many cases it appears the further you are outcast socially from core culture on PFC, the more influential you are.

This may be because everyone on PFC is, indeed, fucking crazy. The quiet next door neighbor, the friendly cop on the corner, your best friend, your parents?! All of them absolutely, unequivocably, entirely bugshit nuts, possibly only requiring the slightest nudge to boil up girlfriend-face stew or believe their grief makes them physically invincible.

As much as I love PE/CD, guys, it’s better grounded in a setting that’s not wholly on PFC. The more FC you want, the more you need to lean on the social-focus strengths of the system, and they’re at odds.4

As Jake says, “Plus, Classroom Deathmatch is free!” which is its own advocation. I suggest going to check it out, and having a good time with it even if it is only in the same solar system as Planet Fucking Crazy.

[info]_grimtales_ suggests Feng Shui which, while it’s one of my favourite mid-crunch games, I’m just going to have to say “No” to. Yes, you could run around on PFC in FS, the problem as I see it for that solution is one of insufficient insanity and a tendency toward over-mechanification. So much of the things your character can attempt and be successful have to be pre-considered and worked into the sheet that it doesn’t catch the edge of the wave you need to ride to get really deep into PFC. Plus, it’s just too crunchy for what it does. A great game for the period (1996 for the 1st ed, 1999 for the second), but really, guys, we’ve moved past explicit skill lists in mechanics for almost half a decade now. FS was great in the fact it helped pioneer the “merged attribute-skill matrix” as I think of it, with the ability to apply different attributes to a skill to get different results5. That was great. But it’s kind of done these days; Trait systems express the core idea better and more flexibly.

[info]thandrak suggests Teenagers From Outer Space or Toon. This is me giving you the stink-eye, dude. Not the least reason being in the first case it’s always better to recommend something that’s actually seen print this decade, and in the latter … Take six Bonk. Have you ever tried running something even remotely serious (and PFC is very remotely serious) with either of those? Aside from having mechanics that grate and jitter like a twenty-year old transmission that’s never been tuned up6, neither of them even remotely work for the feel we’re talking about. I’ll even cop to having Toon and all its suppliments on my shelf, but I’d never think of taking it down for this.7

Next post, I promise, I’ll get down to talking about Beast Hunters, Over the Edge and Universalis, plus the obvious option I completely forgot, Wushu. Possibly, in a flash of “spacing it out and making fat egoboo from each one because I write as if I’m posting game suppliments, one at a time and stretched out interminably” I’ll treat each one seperately.

  1. … which, Jake being the actual writer of the source system and such, I should likely tread warily around, but …

  2. Yes, you can kill me for using such a word.

  3. I never rolled higher than a d8, ever, until college. It is possible I was Psychic. The rest of my stats? Blood Type: O. Junishi: The Rat. Void 5, Earth 1, Fire 4, Air 3, Water 2. You know, just in case you were curious.

  4. That said, I’m horribly tempted to try and write some kind of integration between Classroom Deathmatch and Chain Reaction 3.0, maybe with somewhat fewer than 50 students and more tactical maneuver.

  5. Ie. Physical+Guns lets you shoot, Mind+Guns lets you know something about weapons, etc.

  6. … and that description is deliberate …

  7. Dear Hell, Toon was published in 1984. The Deluxe Edition was published in ’91. I suddenly feel very, very old.

Well not quite. I mean nature will never come up with monsters as stupid as some of the stuff in the Monstrous Compendium or the Fiend Folio. But it sure is capable of producing some oddities.

Like the armadillo-crocodile. Make it giant size, give it a flame breath, and maybe even some INT and spells and you have the perfect challenge for your next session.

This is my first post here, and I just thought I'd share the work of yet another person who doesn't know wtf they're doing on Etsy :) No matter how hard he tries, I have yet to see anything remotely resembling talent in his store.

Behold, underwater life clusterfuck!

Also Tricia is now getting into the show, so I'm not bitching.

But 5 episodes for a 20 page short story?! The entire first novel was only 6 episodes.

9th-Jul-2009 06:23 pm - Looking For some to do a drawing

I'm writing a book for a girlfriend as a surprise 40th birthday gift.  I've decided to bind the book and now need some type of art for the front cover.  I've tried my hand at doing the drawing and I'm not really satisfied with it.  I'm trying to find an artist that could develop a cover for me.  It doesn't have to be professional a pencil drawing would be perfectly fine.  I've found the pictures of the male and female to use for the cover and just need someone to take the separate pictures and draw them in a couple-like pose together.   I hope that made sense.

If anyone is interested in helping out or knows someone that can help please direct them to my journal.  Of course, I will pay the artist for their time and art.

this doodle of buffy and angel has been sitting on my desk for weeks.

i can't draw a man to save my life (something to work on, as always), and i'm terribly sad that poor angel even remotely resembles mr. edward cullen. i guess there is something about silly hair and major cheekbones [eta that my boyfriend may or may not have ahem] that scream "vampire" but still.

9th-Jul-2009 10:47 am - Threes and Gaming
One: Car needed new tires.

Two: Roman cut his ear on something. There was a lot of blood to clean up. But he's been to the emergency vet and is now wearing a cone that he clearly hates. But he'll be fine.

Three: The pipe that leads from the AC's drip pan to outside was partially plugged up. It overflowed. I learned this when I went back to the kitchen with a fistfull of paper towels to throw away and saw water dripping out of a nail hole (the previous owners had something hanging on the wall). The kicker is that, for some reason, AC repair folk are hard to schedule during the summer in Houston. So they won't be able to fix it until tomorrow. And then I've got to get someone to look at the sheetrock and see if it's gotta go or not.

Glad this sort of thing doesn't happen in fours. (Knocks wood)

The Great Gaming Reorg continues. The google spreadsheet has 16 possible RPGs pitched. Sadly, none of my pitches are in the top. On the other hand, I think the top of the heap games sound like a heck of a lot of fun, so there's that. I do think having many games in rotation is going to require a different sort of playstyle. So much of gaming is about the long term, but this will require focusing on having the awesome show up right now, as opposed to the slow burn.
9th-Jul-2009 10:43 am - Art Therapy
Okay, so I am going to become an art therapist, gods willing. The first thing I get when I tell folks this is, of course, "What is art therapy?" You can google this and get different explanations, including the "official" definition from The American Art Therapy Association:

cut for length, worth reading for the curious )

But, how about a working definition from someone who is just learning about it? Well, here goes. Art therapy is like any other kind of therapy - work done to improve the self (or family, or marriage, as the case may be, but each participant is a single infinitely complex self, so...). There is a psychoanalytical side, definitely, because the information about how the mind works, the kind of patterns people fall into, knowing how people respond to developmental disruptions, etc, is crucial in being able to connect with what your clients or patients are seeking and/or needing. But. The act of creation, in itself, is therapeutic. It is cathartic. It is peaceful, and loving, and fundamentally good. Yes, I will go so far as to say that, and can probably get challenged, but it is my belief.

Expression through image making is sublingual. It gives form to feelings and thoughts we may not be able to articulate with words. Though we are deft w/ language, it is still limited. There is a time in our lives, very early on, where we don't have words at all, but we most definitely have feelings and perception. Also, if you simply never learn the words for certain things, you will never be able to describe them. This is where making art can help. It doesn't have to make "sense" verbally, but yet it is a completely total and honest expression of the self in that moment. A therapist can then help the person make sense of it, talk about it, or relate to it, because they are trained to know how best to do this. Initially there was a strong emphasis on interpreting the pictures along strict analytical lines, but this has fallen aside for a more holistic approach (which appeals to me). Still, there are certain themes that show up either at particular developmental points or which tend to indicate certain aspects... but ultimately the patient or client is the one who "knows" what the artwork "means" (even if they don't consciously know it). The art therapist helps them find their meaning here, and this can begin to unearth and give name to things that had previously gone nameless and shapeless.

Everyone can be creative. Everyone IS creative, as a child. Then it falls away for some, either as they are told there are isn't any good, or when they begin to self critique harshly that their artwork doesn't look "real," or simply as other interests take their time and attention. But the ability to make marks is inherently pleasurable, and children draw recognizable shapes (first starting with a scribble which almost all children do as soon as they are able to hold a drawing tool) long before they can speak. This is just about going back to that place of non judgment and non fear and letting what is inside of you come out in a way that doesn't have to do with words and will not be judged and is ultimately safe and curative.

Can you tell I am in love?

I've got TONS more to say on this, but I'm stopping here for now. More later.

EDIT: GIP!
One year ago today, the cat we took in had six kittens. We already knew we wouldn't be able to keep all of them but by November, we had to move sooner than we had planned. I ended up taking the four we couldn't keep to the Lumpkin County Animal Shelter. I was able to find out that one of the four was adopted about a week later but I never found out about the others. Their names were Mr Ferocious, Sir Purrs-a-lot, Ladybug and Spot. They were all black and white, short haired. If anyone knows anything about any of them, please let me know. I still miss them. It would be nice to know that they're safe and happy and loved. I know the chance of this is extremely small but I want to try any way. I can be reached through my info page.
