Ever had one of those days where you have an idea, a good idea, then sink a good six to eight hours into the thing, before you realize there's just no way in Hell its going to come together for you? Then you're faced with the question of whether you're just going to keep bloody-mindedly hammering at it, or set it aside and move on to other things?
I had one of those moments last night.
The idea: A nice, big, 2ft x 3ft poster, assembled by me, advertising my Donjon and Wushu games, for Galactic Quest's marathon. Simple, right? Put together some nice, simple graphic pieces, drop in some text, and Bob's your uncle, right?
I can lay out a book in my sleep. Putting together a simple poster gave me a nightmare shuddering agony of effort, and eight hours later, I still hadn't put anything together I was proud of.
I could have kept hammering at it, but frankly the results were so dismal I decided a hearty "fuck it" was warranted. So, I did so.
Clearly, I'll never really be much of a graphic artist. I suppose I can accept that. I still wish Corel Ventura had been a usable piece of software; its an engineer's layout system as opposed to the graphic-designer-minded InDesign I currently use.
So it goes.
In any case, I finally found a use for the black and white map of Namenkreuz I built; I'll put it on the cardstock cover of the booklet. Not the best cover ever conceived, but its functional.
If I had a lick of sense, I'd give up any thought that I have artistic talent in any field but slamming words together in a rough journeyman fashion.
