In a rare moment of sane behaviour, I've decided to wholly gank the Peercast hooks on the Redoubt. I don't come to this position on whim, but after careful consideration and intensive debate.

Well, OK, after noticing no one can ever seem to access it and I'm the only one who did. That's kind of meaningful.

The problem is that, really, the tech doesn't seem to play nice with NAT and port forwarding, for whatever reasons. Which is, ultimately, bizarre as Hell, since even BitTorrent and its ilk can play nice with others that way.

Ah well. I need to find some other means of stream distribution or find an output redirector for a "real service" if I get more listeners. Which I'd like, pointedly.

Ah, technological annoyances. How we love thee.

(Speaking of which, you need to get the Redoubt Podcast. Yes, you. Right now.)

Go!

OK, yes, I jerked Peercast off the server so hard its brains might have got a little fuzzy, but life is kind to me. Well, more accurately I spent some time digging around in Google for other P2P streaming applications.

There are others!

So, if there's anyone out there who wants to help me experiment, the current prospective target is using P2P-Radio. Similar sort of thing going on with it, though a much, much less complicated system protocol than Peercast, which seems like it might be more robust (if less widely spread).

I'm not ready to put the link up on the Redoubt yet, but it could certainly make its way there if there's interest enough ... and it works. And if not? I'll keep searching out solutions.

There has to be a reasonable, simply configured broadcast solution for peer distribution. There has to. Its the biggest impediment to individuals entering the creator culture in a big way. Podcasting is only part of the question; the required format is too inflexible for all uses. I want more contiguous programming.

Ah well. On with it!

There's very little as frustrating as having a power blink when your local network is an interconnected web of dissimilar machines and they all need different babying to come up.

Sigh.

On the up-side, P2P-Radio is installed and running for testing. Bang on it a bit and see what you think.

OgreCave once again brings us the scoop:

  • As if there was any doubt, Margaret Weis has confirmed they're releasing the Serenity RPG at GenCon for the Firefly movie.

OK, see, I'm alright with the idea of a Firefly RPG. Its the kind of setting that screams out for one, after all. There's all the necessary tropes: guns, cool visuals, spaceships, and even hints of psychic phenomena. All the winning things.

But who in the name of holy Hell put this wonder in the hands of Weis, whose Sovereign Stone, while intriguing from a game design PoV, was complete and utter crap? And D20 crap on top of that.

Who is responsible for this travesty!?

The depth of my disgust cannot be measured.

Well, well well..... You scored 49%!

You know what to do to win a lady's affection, you just don't
understand why you're doing it. Enjoying a gentlemanly lifestyle is 1/2
the equation.
You need to understand every action has an equal or greater reaction.
When you figure out what makes a lady feel good, you'll figure out why
she makes you feel good.
Good luck in life, and love.

My test tracked 1 variable How you compared to other people your age and gender:
You scored higher than 1% on Prince Points

Mmmm, not really surprising. I'm far too honest to be a romantic. Villainous cad, sure.

Looks like Blizzard has finally twigged to the fact that they need to move some population around from high-pop servers to low-pop.

The obvious question in my mind is ... what are they smoking that Argent Dawn isn't one of the first ones where its possible?

High Pop Realms (Origin) -> Low Pop Realms (Destination)

Warsong (PvP)->Bonechewer (PvP)
Arthas (PvP)->Nathrezim (PvP)

And on the prospective list:

Bleeding Hollow (PvP) -> ??? - To be announced
Illidan (PvP) -> ??? - To be announced
Blackrock (PvP) -> ??? - To be announced
Stormreaver (PvP) -> ??? - To be announced
Shattered Hand (PvP) -> ??? - To be announced
Mannoroth (PvP) -> ??? - To be announced
Blackhand (PvE) -> ??? - To be announced
Whisperwind (PvE) -> ??? - To be announced

The vast bulk of the migrating servers are PvP. And not one is RP. Why the utter contempt for the RP folks, especially given that they have one server that's problematic and migration would be the easy way to fix it?

Grrrrr.

Hmmmm. Interesting quiz here, in the Meyers-Briggs sense, but for MMORPG players (which we old-timers used to refer to as MUDs, Multi-User Dungeons, long before there was more than glowing green or amber letters on our screens).

I'll cut, because its slightly lengthy.

Bartle Test Within )

I'm fairly amused at some of the references within. I'm almost tempted to go sniffing around MU*s again, but I'm all too aware I'd get sucked into the black hole. Again.
