Time's Up: Finally, my shift is over, I can crash and dream deep. And, damn it, I deserve the rest. Deserve, I say.

Stargate SG-1 was very intriguing this week. A fine example of "bigger-stick diplomacy" in action. Its hard to find a bigger stick than that, say I.

I just finished reading Charnel Gods, a suppliment for Sorcerer & Sword. There are very few games gutsy enough to tie the end of the world to the status of one character's humanity, but by gum, they did it. There can be no doubt your characters are meaningful in changing the world there.

Combat Mission continues to fascinate -- now, if only the frood with which I started a PBEM the other night would submit his next move, so I can properly whallop on him.

Japan's Oddities: You know, the underlying idea of building a secular memorial to those who died in the two nuclear bombs is not, in itself, a strange idea. Its much like what we're talking about in regards to the 9-11 attack in this country. No, the odd part is the current memorial is located at Tokyo's Yasukuni Shrine, where, and I quote:
Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi visited Yasukuni on Jan. 14 for the third time since taking office. Because Yasukuni also enshrines Japanese war criminals, the visit incurred protests from Asian countries, particularly China and South Korea, who were victimized by Japan's past war aggressions.
Now that is something a little more odd, like us putting the monument to the 9-11 victims in a vast cathedral, where we also tucked away the celebrated folks who, say, fought in the Crusades, then try to look surprised as the guys in the Middle East take offense. Welcome to Japan. The other interesting bit about it is the president of South Korea has already said he'll visit the shrine in Japan if its built -- and that's a significant bit of diplomacy, given their history.

Boom Today: And, in other news, it appears my PBEM partner finally sent me his move ... and in a perverse twist of fate, his forces and mine are engaged in long-range gun battles right out the door. Yay. Suddenly I've got a bad feeling about this. Hurray for at least the cover of buildings, though I've got to get that assault HT on the move before his artillery or mortars zero in; whatever it is, it can't be too big, the craters are tiny. Thank hades my fixed canon is in a nice dug-in foxhole.

Save the Republic:
Generally Liberal
How Republican Are You?

brought to you by Quizilla

(I'm generally liberal? I mean, ex-screw me, but I'm edging more into right wing territory the older I get, since, you know, I actually have stuff now to protect, and I'm still generally liberal? Of course, this quiz manages to make itself a charicture by reducido ad absurdiam, so we know how much to respect it, but, even so ... Bah, politics. Kill everyone with a pretention to politics and let the rest of us live easier.)
